I am really unsure about prisons because it seems this is the buggiest issue in the game, with dwarfs virtually never feeding prisoners. The living quarters will have to be the largest area so it will 'spill out over the sides' and go up/down 2 floors on the left and right: farmers, cooks, and their ilk will be in the lower floors, while craftsdwarfs and other workshop folk'll be in the upper floors (thus connected directly by a passage to their workshop for instance).Having read several threads, I thought I'd go with a vertical layout, from top floor to lowest: I thought I'd ask you guys what your best thoughts on layout are. It became clear to me that there were massive haulage issues caused by noobish outlay of stockpiles, setting of wheelbarrow/bin/barrel options, and other associated minor things that can turn into a giant headache if you just sort of bumble your way through it. It was taking a long time, then I noticed people were dying from dehydration, even though we had alcohol supplies. But then I decided to move all my stores. First Goblin raid was a walk in the park. Never faced any problems, got up to a 100+ population pretty quick. I managed to reclaim the fortress and my new seven guys walked into a working home.
