![]() These striped markings are known as necklaces and bracelets. ![]() Additionally, many classic tabbies will have spotted bellies and striped bands around the neck and down the legs. On the forehead between the eyes there is a characteristic “M”, on each side of the cat you will see a concentric swirl called the “bullseye”, on the back between the shoulders there is a lighter area knowns as the “butterfly”, and 3 dark stripes follow along the spine. This tabby pattern is characterized by broad bands of dark striping against a lighter background. Let’s take a look at the key features of each here: There are 4 distinct tabby patterns: Classic Tabby, Mackerel Tabby, Spotted Tabby and the Ticked Tabby. ![]() You will find tabby cats in a vast array of coat colors as well, ranging including cream, cameo, lilac, seal, gray, silver, red, brown, golden, cinnamon, chocolate, blue and black smoke. Ticked tabbies have a subtler tabby patterning. Both longhair and shorthair coated cats may exhibit a tabby pattern. Because many different breeds of cats sport the tabby coat, its hard to generalize about their personalities. In short, a cream tabby cat is a dilute version of an orange tabby cat. Their eyes are typically golden or amber-colored. A tabby cat’s paws are generally pink instead of black or brown. Its body coat is an off-white or cream color. While the tabby pattern is common in many breeds, it is not a breed in and of itself. The result is a cat with dark stripes and light orange and amber markings. The Abyssinian / æ b s n i n / is a breed of domestic short-haired cat with a distinctive 'ticked' tabby coat, in which individual hairs are banded with different colors. Tabby can also be mixed with other marking genes to create cats that display both (i.e., tabby calicos, pointed tabbies, and tabbies with white on their coat.) Below I will describe each. Diagram of Agouti color banding on individual hairs Image: © There are mackerel tabbies, classical tabbies, ticked tabbies, and spotted. The tabby pattern is determined by the agouti gene which controls the distribution of pigment within each hair of the cat. The classic pattern is made up of whorls, which create a shape resembling a target on the side and, as a result, is sometimes known as the “blotched tabby.A tabby cat is a cat of any breeding that displays a coat pattern featuring stripes, swirls, dots and rings. You see this in all black cats, where pigment cells that should have made different colors only produce black. Of course, mutations can occur, which result in different coat colors and patterns like thinner stripes, white spots, or alterations in pigmentation. This gene also activates in the embryo before a cat’s fur develops. ![]() Ticked tabbies do not have the stripes and spotted coat patterns of the other tabbies. ![]() They are mostly noted in the Abyssinian, Somali, and Singapura breeds, but like the rest of the tabbies, they can pop up elsewhere. In a study published in “Nature Communications,” 1 researchers reported that the gene responsible for the familiar tabby pattern is called Dickkopf WNT Signaling Pathway Inhibitor 4 (DK44 for short)., DK44 is a messenger protein that signals other skin cells surrounding it where dark hair will grow, which, if all goes well, will eventually become the dark markings of tabby cats. Ticked tabbies are an ancient and possibly the original domestic tabby variety. While we have a rough idea of how long tabbies have been with us, we don’t know much about what made their fur look the way it does. ![]()
